Details for 2011 Chequamegon 100

Hey Chequamegon 100 riders -

I know many of you have been waiting patiently for this information, and thank you! The additional time we spent on it this year means we have some great news for you.

The Chequamegon 100 is pleased to announce that our host and sponsor for the event is Lakewoods Resort. Lakewoods has a very long history of supporting silent sports events in the Chequamegon area, and we wanted to work with them.

The Chequamegon 100 will start, finish, and be hosted by Lakewoods Resort this year. What does this mean for you?

Group lodging rates: All reservations must go directly through Lakewoods resort. Mention you are part of the Cheq 100 and get discounted rates on all rooms, condos, and villas. One night stay=30% advertised rates Two night stay= 40% Group rate ends May 1st, so make your reservation now. Lakewoods Resort 21540 County Road M Cable, Wisconsin 54821 Main: 715-794-2561 Reservations: 800-255-5937 Email: reservations@lakewoodsresort.com

Because we will be starting, finishing, and hosting the event out of Lakewoods, we strongly suggest you stay there to make it easy on yourself, and support these fine folks that have, and continue to support us in silent sports events.

We will also be doing a Friday night dinner as well, that you are strongly encouraged to attend, as we will be going over details for the event, having registration, and preparing you for the big event the next day. Plus, its great to socialize with your fellow riders!

Friday May 20 Registration Party (6-9pm) Dinner served from 6-8pm Pasta Feed..$12.50 gratuity included Includes two pastas; Alfredo, marinara & meat sauces Sautéed veggies Italian salad Assorted French breads Ice cream bar with sundae toppings Cash bar will also be available

Additionally, Lakewoods will be hosting a breakfast before the ride the next morning:

Saturday Breakfast 5-8am (open late for families and support crews) Buffet Breakfast…$10.00 gratuity included Pancakes, Scrambled eggs, Juice, Cereal, Pastries, Bagels

As you can see, the crew at Lakewoods are going far and above to give us all a great experience, so please support them.

Even if you cannot stay at Lakewoods, they are still helping you out by offering post-ride showers 6-8pm for $5 if you are not staying at the resort.

Even though we have a residence very close by, TK, JM and (our newest director) RH will be staying at Lakewoods to thank them for all they are doing for us. Join us for a good time!

Course – The course will be largely the same as last year, with the exception of starting/ending at Lakewoods resort. This will create a few small changes -

  • The “secret” trails in Seeley will not be a part of the course this year

  • There will be a few new sections of trail added in, and possibly a different combination of fire-roads.

  • The half-way drop this year will be at Hatchery Creek County Park in Hayward, where there is water available, and like last year, we can take one drop bag for you.

  • The biggest change is that this year the course will be fully marked. To do this, I already have some gracious volunteers with Mike and Michelle to help me with marking on Friday, but I need three additional volunteers. If you volunteer to mark the course, you will be expected to ride a 20 mile portion of the course on Friday (stapler, signs and map provided), and in return, I will give out one entry to each of the three volunteers that help us mark on Friday. If you didn't get in this year, this is your chance to jump in and get two rides for the price of one! First three people to commit to volunteer via email will be added to the roster. I will delete this info when we are full for volunteers.

  • Support crew! I know lots of you are bringing people with you that will not ride. I could also use a few volunteers during the day on Saturday, to help with taking bags to Hatchery Creek Park, watching over the course, and helping if we have a rider that needs evac. Verizon cell phones work in Cable now, so if you have a car, a Verizon phone, and are not riding, you are worth your weight in gold to me. It will even earn you a guaranteed entry to 2012 if you so choose.

  • The ride will be run the same as last year, with a mass start at 7am. The finish will be a sign out sheet at the far north end of Rock Lake Road / FR207

  • We will provide Cue Sheet / Maps at the start of the ride and at the pre-ride dinner at Lakewoods, but not prior. However, with course marking this year, you should not need them unless you get lost.

  • No GPS this year. (GPS allowed, but no .gpx files will be created or given)

Saturday night post-ride party! - This year, our great friend Mick at Rivers Eatery in Cable is continuing his support of the event, and we will have our post-ride party at his place! More details to follow, but we are adding some fun features to make it even more of a celebration!

As with last year, the same rules apply:

Rules

The Chequamegon 100 follows the ethos of Self Supported Racing. The Ethos: Get yourself to the finish without support from any other individuals. The Golden Rule: You are responsible for you.

Be Prepared

Know your limits

Bring the equipment, food, and hydration you need to get to the finish (their will be options for a water re-fill on course and one bag drop, no other outside support allowed.)

Please keep in mind the self-supported ethos.... If you get lost, there is nobody to come get you. If you get tired, there is nobody to come get you. There is no emergency service out there. No matter what happens, you are responsible for you. You cannot ride this like a WORS or WEMS race, you must keep your head up, your wits sharp, and pay attention. Some of these trails have not been ridden much since last year, and we have not pre-ridden each piece. There may be sticks, logs, trees, missing signs, and other unknown things that could hurt you. Be ready for this and be prepared. If you do not agree to this, do not start the ride.

Thanks folks, this year is shaping up to be really great, and we are very excited to have you out there with us. See you soon!

TK, JM and RH

  1. Thanks for the great comments. We look forward to seeing everyone this spring. The forest should be blooming and trails great for your event. More important I'll be sure we have some great Angry Minnow brew for you and make sure the food is great. See you soon!

  2. The change to Lakewood's will be sweet! Whether there in winter or summer, that place is always great and the people always very accommodating.

Bummer about the course being marked. The navigation requirement was one of the things that helped to make the inaugural Cheq100 such a unique and awesome event that had people talking, and planning, and wondering, and getting spun around, and pretty much experiencing an incredibly different aspect of off-roading than most were used to. Now it will be just another mindless grind of a race to see who can make their pedals go around the fastest. Granted it will still be an awesome day in the northwoods, but to me a big part of truly being somewhere is knowing where you are and how you got there. This weekend was a nice release from the constant following of signs and directions that pervades so much of the rest of our life. Anyone agree?
